A
large number of organizations have mushroomed
recently, offering training in various outdoor
activities through Camps held by them in a variety
of locations.
These
activities include hiking, trekking, rapelling,
Mountain climbing, skiing, etc.
However,
some of the organizations do not take adequate
steps to ensure the safety of the participants.
Moreover, many of them insure the participants
only within the vicinity of the camps.
Some
organizations do not have an adequate "trainer
to participant ratio", which occasionally
results in accidents.
Going
by the experience of a child, who had participated
in a camp in Switzerland organized by a Company
with a French name, the child participant was
left nursing a huge medical bill in addition to
his injured knee. The injury took place in a skiing
training session conducted by the camp.
In
this Swiss camp, the injured participant had to
walk nearly half a kilometer on an injured knee.
The local Doctor expressed his inability to get
an MRI scan done, because such equipment was not
available in Verbier, as a result of which the
participant decided to fly back to his country
for further treatment. Subsequently he submitted
his medical bill to the camp, who refused the
claim stating that, their insurance was only valid
in Switzerland. They neither gave a proportionate
refund of the participants fees nor did they give
any voucher for use in future camps.
Participant
should evaluate all aspects of the organizer thoroughly
before they send their child for such camps.
